Welcome to our exciting online project. Have a look around and please feel free to get involved.
What does Chichester Harbour mean to you? Have you a particular memory connected with the harbour? Perhaps it was your first experience in a boat, a great day out fishing, an encounter with a seal or other wildlife or even an extreme weather event. Whatever your story, we want to hear it!
Simply tell your memory, add photos and video, or just browse through the hundreds of stories already online.
Most importantly, if you have enjoyed visiting this website, please tell others about it.

FAQ’s
This project is run by the Chichester Harbour Conservancy and we very much appreciate your input. If you need any further information about the project or the information presented on the site please get in touch on our contact us page.
-
Q: What is the point of this website? Click for Answer
A: My Chichester Harbour has been created to celebrate 40 years of Chichester Harbour Conservancy. Over this time the Conservancy have done much to conserve, maintain and improve the harbour and Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty for recreation, nature conservation and natural beauty.
We wanted to link our stories with yours. Through the contributed stories and memories we hope to develop a picture of what makes Chichester Harbour special to individuals. The stories may also give us useful anecdotal evidence on climate change. We hope that many hundreds of people will enjoy browsing through the stories and also contributing to the project.
-
Q: What kind of stories and memories do you want? Click for Answer
A: If you have ever visited Chichester Harbour then you have a story to tell! If you need inspiration then think about:
What special events in your life do you link with Chichester Harbour?
When was the first time you came to the harbour?
How has the harbour changed during your lifetime?
Have you or do you work here? What is the history of your business? Or do you know of a business that used to be here?
Have you any experiences linked to extreme weather conditions in the harbour, perhaps the great freeze in 1963 or the storm of 1987?
Do you think climate change has had an impact on the harbour? Have you any evidence?
Have you a story related to sailing, walking, visiting harbour villages, viewing harbour wildlife?
How would you like to see the harbour change in the coming years?
Or simply tell us your favourite spot in the harbour and why it is special to you, even better send us a photo or short video clip.
-
Q: Who has the copyright for submitted information? Click for Answer
A: The copyright will stay with you. However, by submitting information including photographs and video to this website you are agreeing that it can be used by Chichester Harbour Conservancy and will be retained in their archive. All submitted material may be used to promote the website. Nothing will be given by Chichester Harbour Conservancy to a third party without your express permission. However, as the information is on a public website we cannot control downloading and copying by visitors to the website.
-
Q: How long with the information be kept? Click for Answer
A: We plan to keep the website live for 12 months so we can collect as many stories as possible. After that no further entries can be added but the website will be left live for three years for browsing. After that all the information submitted will be kept by Chichester Harbour Conservancy and may be used in other related projects.
-
Q. My item and story is about someone else. Do you also need their permission to publish it? Click for Answer
A. We can only publish things which belong to you and where you have copyright. For example your item might be a photo of something which belonged to your grandparents with its story which they told to you. Obviously we can’t publish anything which is illegal, unreasonable or inappropriate, such as gossip which shows someone living (or indeed recently dead) in a negative light.
-
Q: I have some old photos and don’t know how to get them online. Click for Answer
A: The easiest way may be to re-photograph them with a digital camera and then upload that image. Alternatively if you have a scanner, scan and then upload the photo. If it is easier for you, then please arrange to send or bring your photos to the Harbour Office where we can scan them. If you post anything in please send by recorded delivery. If you are coming in person please contact Ali Beckett first to make sure someone is here who can scan the photo for you. Tel: 01243 512301 or email: allie@conservancy.co.uk. You can also bring your photos along to one of the public sessions we will be holding.
-
Q: I don’t agree with one of the entries, how can I get it changed? Click for Answer
A: Memories are very personal and each person will remember an event in a different way. There is no right or wrong. If you think something is factually incorrect please email us and we will contact the contributor and discuss if it needs to be changed. If you have a different view of an event, then add your story too!
-
Q: I want to change something in my entry? Click for Answer
A: Please email us with the changes you want to make and we will action it for you.
-
Q: I would like to add my story but I’m not very good with computers. Click for Answer
A: That’s not a problem, please come along to one of our public sessions. We will have some computers set up and can help you get your story online. Alternatively just write it out and send it in to: My Chichester Harbour, Chichester Harbour Conservancy, Harbour Office, Itchenor, Chichester PO20 7AW.
-
Q: Where and when are the public sessions? Click for Answer
A: Wednesday 1 June, 10am – 2pm, Harbour Education Centre, Dell Quay PO20 7EE
Thursday 2 June, 10am – 12pm, Hayling Island Lifeboat Station, PO11 9SJ
Saturday 30 July, 10am – 3pm, The Spring Arts Centre, Havant
-
Q: How can I contact other contributors? Click for Answer
A: If you would like to get in touch with someone, then please email us with your contact details and who you want to contact. We will then forward your details and leave it to the contributor to get in touch with you if they wish to.
-
Q: Who is funding this website? Click for Answer
A: My Chichester Harbour has been generously supported by The Friends of Chichester Harbour, Chichester Coastal Change Pathfinder Project and Chichester Harbour Conservancy.
